PRIORITY

Public Education

Too many teachers are leaving the profession, and too few college students are choosing to go into teaching. Low pay, excessive paperwork, constant testing and safety concerns are some of the factors causing teachers to leave. Meanwhile, the recently-passed Voucher program threatens to pull billions of dollars out of public education to unaccountable private schools for the wealthy.

Quality Public Education, Not Handouts to Unregulated Private Schools

Let's be clear: the $1 billion(+) voucher program pushed through by President Trump, Governor Abbott, and Lt. Governor Patrick is a terrible deal for Texas kids.

They forced it through despite bipartisan opposition, purely to please wealthy donors. Meanwhile, Texas’ teachers are leaving in droves because of low pay, tough working conditions and increased meddling by politicians who don’t know the first thing about teaching. The few Republican lawmakers who typically supported public schools were threatened with primary challenges and line-item vetoes if they didn't fall in line. The result? A voucher scheme that steals resources from school districts already struggling to keep up with inflation, and hands them to private schools who are not held to the same standards as our public schools.

  • Better Pay for Our Educators – Teachers and support staff deserve salaries that match their crucial work. We can't keep good teachers in our classrooms if we keep underpaying them. [HB 1770]

  • Less Testing, More Teaching – Our kids and teachers are drowning in STAAR test prep that steals valuable classroom time and creates unnecessary stress. Let's put the focus back on real learning.

  • Keeping Our Education Dollars in Texas – Vikki stood with Democrats and Republicans alike to resist voucher schemes for years. She'll keep fighting against programs that funnel your tax dollars to unregulated private schools who may not even spend those dollars in Texas! [HB 3103]

  • Funding That Keeps Pace With Reality – School districts shouldn't have to struggle just to cover basic costs. It's time to raise the basic allotment to previous levels, and ensure that future funding keeps up with inflation. [HB 1770]

  • Protecting Separation of Church and State – Your tax dollars shouldn't fund religious education. Public money belongs in public schools that welcome all students regardless of background or ability.
